We love cruising, but we also know how quickly the cost can add up. The good news is that with a little flexibility and planning, you can often find a great price without giving up the cruise experience you really want.
Book Early, Then Keep Checking
We usually recommend booking early, especially if you want a particular ship, itinerary or cabin location. Booking early gives you more choices, but that does not mean you should stop watching the price.
Continue checking for new promotions before your final payment date. Depending on the cruise line and the terms of your reservation, you may be able to take advantage of a lower eligible fare or a better offer.
Be Flexible With Your Dates
One of the easiest ways to save is to be flexible about when you sail. Cruises during the summer, holidays and school breaks are often more expensive.
Sailing in the fall, early December or during another less-popular week can make a noticeable difference. Sometimes simply moving your vacation by one week can save you quite a bit.
Compare the Total Cost
The lowest advertised fare is not always the best deal. Make sure you compare the full cost of the cruise, including:
- Drinks
- Wi-Fi
- Crew gratuities
- Specialty dining
- Onboard credit
- Taxes and port fees
We enjoy cruise lines such as Princess that offer packages combining drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities. A slightly higher fare may actually save you money when it includes items you would purchase anyway.

Consider Different Ships and Cabins
The newest ships usually receive the most attention, but they are also often the most expensive. An older ship sailing a similar itinerary may offer a wonderful vacation for less.
We have enjoyed sailing on the Celebrity Reflection out of Fort Lauderdale. It was a beautiful ship with great food!
We also think it is important to consider how much time you plan to spend in your cabin. An inside cabin may be a great way to save, while a balcony may be worth the additional cost on a scenic sailing such as Alaska.
We prefer to spend the extra money on a balcony because we enjoy relaxing there and watching the scenery. Other cruisers say they only return to their cabin to sleep, so spending more on a balcony may not be as important to them.
Guarantee cabins can also offer lower prices, but remember that the cruise line will select your cabin location.
Check Every Available Discount
Look for any discounts you may qualify for, including military, residency, loyalty, casino or past-guest offers. It is also worth checking whether the cruise line is offering onboard credit, reduced deposits or package promotions.
Consider Using a Travel Advisor
A knowledgeable cruise travel advisor can compare ships, cabin categories and promotions while helping you understand exactly what is included. A travel advisor may also be able to watch for eligible price reductions after you book.
For us, the best cruise price is not always the cheapest number on the screen. It is the fare that gives you the ship, cabin and experience you want at the best overall value.
