Our Honest Universal Orlando Strategy for Saving Time AND Money
Planning a trip to Universal Orlando Resort in 2026? One of the biggest questions families face is whether Universal’s Express Pass is really worth the extra cost.
After several Universal vacations, we’ve found the answer is:
sometimes absolutely yes… and sometimes not at all.
A lot depends on:
- when you visit,
- where you stay,
- and how you plan your trip.
With Universal Epic Universe now open, planning has become even more important because costs can add up quickly if you are not careful.
The good news? We’ve found a few strategies that can save a LOT of money while still giving you an amazing vacation.

What Is Universal Express Pass?
Universal Express Pass allows guests to skip the regular standby lines at many attractions in:
- Universal Studios Florida
- Islands of Adventure
During busy times like spring break, holidays, or summer, it can save hours of waiting in line.
But Express Pass can also become incredibly expensive, especially for families. Sometimes the price can honestly make you stop and rethink your whole vacation budget.
That’s why we think one of the biggest “Universal hacks” is being smart about where you stay.

Why We Love Staying at Universal Deluxe Hotels
One of our favorite Universal strategies is staying at one of the deluxe hotels that include FREE Unlimited Express Pass for every guest in the room.
These hotels include:
- Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel
- Loews Royal Pacific Resort
- Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
For many families, booking one of these hotels can actually cost LESS than buying Express Pass separately for everyone.
Seriously.
When we first priced it out, we were shocked.
Why We Keep Coming Back to Hard Rock Hotel
Out of all the Universal hotels, we probably stay at Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel the most.
For us, the location alone is hard to beat.
Being able to walk to:
- CityWalk,
- Universal Studios,
- and Islands of Adventure
without dealing with buses after a long day in the parks is a game changer.
After a hot Florida afternoon, being able to quickly walk back to the room, relax for a little while, and then head back out for the evening just makes the whole trip feel more relaxing.
We also love the energy of the hotel. The music, atmosphere, and overall vibe make it feel exciting from the moment you walk into the lobby.
And honestly, ending the night with a walk through CityWalk instead of waiting in transportation lines is one of those little things that makes the vacation feel easier.
Best Value Deluxe Hotel
If you want the best overall value, Loews Royal Pacific Resort is often the sweet spot.
Many times, it is the lowest-priced deluxe hotel while still including Unlimited Express Pass.
You still get the deluxe benefits and easy park access, but at a noticeably lower price point.
We’ve found it’s often one of the smartest choices for families trying to balance budget and convenience.

Portofino Bay Feels Like a Different Vacation
When we want more of an adults-only or romantic getaway feel, we really enjoy Loews Portofino Bay Hotel.
The atmosphere feels completely different from the other Universal resorts.
Walking around the harbor at night honestly feels more like being in a small Italian waterfront town than at a theme park hotel.
It’s quieter, more relaxed, and just has a completely different pace.
For couples trips, anniversary getaways, or vacations where you want a little more downtime mixed in with the parks, Portofino is a fantastic option.

Important Things to Know About Epic Universe
There are some important differences now that Epic Universe is open.
Currently:
- Express Pass from Universal deluxe hotels is NOT valid at Epic Universe.
- Universal Helios Grand Hotel does NOT include Express Pass.
That surprises a lot of people.
Because Epic Universe is still brand new and extremely busy, Express Pass may still absolutely be worth considering there depending on crowd levels and your budget.
Consider a Split Stay
One of our favorite newer strategies is doing a split stay.
This means:
- staying at a deluxe hotel for your Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure days,
- then moving to a value resort or Epic-area hotel for your Epic Universe days.
This can save a surprising amount of money while still maximizing the deluxe hotel benefits.
Our Suggested Universal Strategy
Days 1–3
Stay at:
- Hard Rock
- Royal Pacific
- or Portofino Bay
Use:
- Unlimited Express Pass
- Early Park Admission
- walking access to the parks
Focus on:
- Universal Studios Florida
- Islands of Adventure
Days 4–5
Move to:
- Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort
- Universal Endless Summer Resort
- or splurge on Universal Helios Grand Hotel
We really enjoy the pool areas at Cabana Bay and Endless Summer, especially if you want a more relaxed resort day mixed into the trip.
And if Epic Universe is your priority, Helios has one massive advantage:
it opens directly into Epic Universe.
That convenience is incredibly hard to beat.
Early Entry Is a HUGE Benefit
All Universal hotels include Early Park Admission, and honestly, we think this is one of the most underrated perks.
This is especially important for Harry Potter attractions.
The Harry Potter areas get busy FAST, and getting in early can completely change your day.
We especially recommend taking advantage of early entry for:
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
- Harry Potter attractions
- and the major Epic Universe rides
Sometimes Staying Longer Is Better Than Buying Express Pass
This is something we talk about all the time when planning Universal trips.
Sometimes it honestly makes more sense to:
- stay a couple extra days,
- slow down your schedule,
- and enjoy the parks at a more relaxed pace
instead of spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on Express Pass.
Many times, you can add:
- extra hotel nights
- AND additional park days
for close to what Express Pass alone would cost.
That’s especially true during lower crowd seasons.
Don’t Forget About Annual Passes
If you think there’s even a chance you’ll return to Universal again within the same year, it may be worth looking into an Annual Pass.
The discounts on:
- hotels,
- food,
- merchandise,
- and parking
can add up surprisingly quickly.
Just keep in mind:
Epic Universe is currently not included with standard Annual Passes.
Final Thoughts
For us, Universal Express Pass can absolutely be worth it — but only when used strategically.
The biggest advice we can give is:
- plan your hotel carefully,
- think about how you want your vacation to feel,
- and build a schedule that works for YOUR family.
A little extra planning can honestly save hundreds of dollars and make your Universal vacation much more relaxing and enjoyable.
