Beyond the Parks: Our Favorite Disney World Non-Park Day Activities

One of the biggest mistakes we see Disney visitors make is trying to spend every single day in the parks. While we love Walt Disney World, some of our favorite vacation memories have happened outside the parks entirely.

Whether you’re looking for a break from the crowds, arriving before your park days begin, trying to save a little money, or simply want to experience Disney in a different way, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the magic without using a park ticket.

Here are some of our favorite ways to spend a non-park day at Walt Disney World and around Orlando.

Explore Disney Springs

Disney Springs is one of our favorite places to spend a relaxing afternoon or evening.

You’ll find:

  • World of Disney, the largest Disney store on property
  • Unique Disney merchandise
  • Great restaurants
  • Specialty shops and boutiques
  • Live music and entertainment
  • Seasonal events throughout the year

One of our favorite evening activities is simply walking around Disney Springs, grabbing a snack, and enjoying the atmosphere.

New Dance Party and Live Entertainment

Disney Springs frequently offers live performers, musicians, and special entertainment throughout the evening. The newer dance party area has added even more energy and fun, making it a great nighttime destination for families.

Pin Trading on a Budget

If your family enjoys Disney pin trading, Disney Springs is a great place to trade.

A money-saving tip: consider purchasing trading pins from reputable sellers on eBay before your trip. You’ll often pay significantly less than purchasing pins inside the parks, giving you more opportunities to trade throughout your vacation.

Mike & Tara Tip

If you’re arriving in Orlando on your travel day, Disney Springs is often our first stop. It’s a great way to start the vacation without using a park ticket.

Ride Disney Transportation Just for Fun

Some of Disney’s transportation systems are attractions all by themselves.

Monorail Loop

Ride the monorail and visit:

  • Disney’s Contemporary Resort
  • Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
  • Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Each resort offers unique dining, shopping, and photo opportunities.

Disney Skyliner

The Skyliner has quickly become one of our favorite Disney experiences.

Enjoy incredible views while visiting:

  • Disney’s Riviera Resort
  • Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
  • Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
  • Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Best of all, it’s completely free.

Disney Friendship Boats

The Friendship Boats connecting Epcot, Hollywood Studios, the BoardWalk area, and nearby resorts offer a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

Sometimes we enjoy simply riding the boats and taking in the scenery.

Take the Monorail Resort Loop at Night

While the monorail is often viewed as simply transportation, we think it’s one of Disney World’s most underrated evening activities.

After dark, the monorail loop takes on a completely different atmosphere. The resorts are beautifully lit, the crowds are smaller, and the views around Seven Seas Lagoon are spectacular.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Grab a Dole Whip, enjoy the tropical atmosphere, and relax along the beach.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

The Grand Floridian is especially beautiful at night. Take a stroll through the lobby, enjoy the elegant atmosphere, and soak in the resort’s Victorian charm.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary offers unique views of the monorail passing directly through the resort and beautiful views of Bay Lake.

Mike & Tara Tip

One of our favorite non-park evening activities is riding the monorail loop, stopping at a resort or two for a snack, and ending the night at the Polynesian beach to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks. It feels like a little Disney adventure all by itself—and doesn’t require a park ticket.

Visit Disney Resorts

Many Disney resorts are destinations all on their own.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

If you’ve never visited Animal Kingdom Lodge, put it at the top of your list.

You can view giraffes, zebras, and other African wildlife from the resort’s viewing areas and savannas. It’s one of the most unique experiences available at Walt Disney World without entering a park.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

The Polynesian remains one of our favorite resorts to visit.

Grab a Dole Whip, relax by the beach, and enjoy views across Seven Seas Lagoon.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Take a stroll through Disney’s flagship resort and enjoy the beautiful architecture, shops, and dining options.

Watch Fireworks from the Polynesian Beach

One of Disney’s best free experiences happens every night.

Head to the beach at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and enjoy views of the Magic Kingdom fireworks across Seven Seas Lagoon.

The atmosphere is relaxing, and you’ll often hear the accompanying music piped into the area.

Getting There Without Staying On Site

One of the easiest ways to access Disney resorts without a park ticket is by visiting Disney Springs first and then taking Disney transportation to your destination resort.

Always allow extra travel time, especially in the evening.

Spend an Evening at Disney’s BoardWalk

Disney’s BoardWalk comes alive after dark.

You’ll find:

  • Street performers
  • Magicians
  • Musicians
  • Waterfront views
  • Restaurants
  • Nightlife
  • Beautiful evening scenery

We love grabbing a snack and simply walking along the water while enjoying the entertainment.

It’s one of the most underrated evening activities at Walt Disney World.

Visit a Disney Water Park

One of the most fun ways to spend a non-park day is cooling off at one of Disney’s water parks.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon

Typhoon Lagoon features:

  • One of the largest wave pools in North America
  • A relaxing lazy river
  • Family raft rides
  • Water slides for all thrill levels

Disney’s Blizzard Beach

Blizzard Beach offers:

  • Summit Plummet, one of the tallest and fastest water slides in the world
  • Family-friendly attractions
  • A lazy river
  • Plenty of areas to relax and cool off

Complimentary Water Park Admission for Disney Resort Guests

If you’re staying at a Disney Resort Collection hotel during select summer dates, Disney currently includes complimentary admission to one of its water parks on your check-in day.

This can be a fantastic way to start your vacation, especially if you’re arriving early and don’t want to use a theme park ticket on arrival day.

Mike & Tara Tip

A water park day can be a great way to recharge during a longer Disney vacation. Sometimes a lazy river and a little downtime are exactly what you need before tackling another park day.

Visit During the Holidays

If you’re visiting Walt Disney World between mid-November and the end of December, a non-park day can become one of the most magical days of your trip.

Disney Springs Christmas Tree Stroll

Every holiday season, Disney Springs transforms into a winter wonderland featuring beautifully themed Christmas trees throughout the shopping and dining districts.

Pick up a complimentary map and enjoy the Christmas Tree Stroll as you search for each uniquely decorated tree.

It’s one of our favorite free holiday activities.

Resort Christmas Trees and Decorations

One of our favorite holiday traditions is resort hopping to see the Christmas decorations.

Every Disney resort receives holiday decorations, and each features its own Christmas tree and unique seasonal theme.

Some of our favorite resorts to visit during the holidays include:

  • Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Disney’s BoardWalk Inn
  • Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts

Many resorts also offer special holiday treats and fantastic photo opportunities.

Mike & Tara Tip

If you’re visiting during the holidays, dedicate an evening to riding Disney transportation, visiting a few resorts, viewing the Christmas trees, and ending your night at Disney Springs. It’s one of the best free experiences available at Walt Disney World.

Visit Celebration

Just minutes from Disney property is the charming town of Celebration.

Originally developed by Disney, Celebration offers:

  • Beautiful walking paths
  • A peaceful lakeside park
  • Boutique shopping
  • Excellent restaurants
  • Small-town Florida charm

Whenever we’re looking for a break from the crowds, Celebration is one of our favorite places to relax.

Visit Old Town Kissimmee

If you’re looking for a fun, old-fashioned Florida attraction, consider spending a few hours at Old Town Kissimmee.

Located just minutes from Walt Disney World, Old Town combines shopping, dining, rides, and classic Florida charm in a walkable outdoor setting.

You’ll find:

  • Unique shops and boutiques
  • Family-friendly rides
  • Restaurants and snack stands
  • Live entertainment
  • Fun photo opportunities

Classic Car Shows and Cruise Nights

One of the biggest draws at Old Town is its famous classic car events.

Throughout the week, visitors can enjoy classic car cruises and shows featuring beautifully restored vintage vehicles. Even if you’re not a car enthusiast, it’s fun to stroll the streets and admire the incredible collection of automobiles.

Mike & Tara Tip

Mike especially enjoys checking out the classic cars and cruise nights, while Tara enjoys strolling through the nostalgic town, browsing the shops, and soaking in the old Florida atmosphere. It’s a relaxing and affordable way to spend an evening away from the theme parks.

Explore International Drive

International Drive offers plenty of activities outside the Disney bubble.

ICON Park

Home of The Orlando Eye observation wheel, ICON Park offers incredible views of Orlando along with shopping, dining, and entertainment.

I-Drive Attractions

The International Drive area includes:

  • Mini golf
  • Restaurants
  • Shopping
  • Entertainment venues
  • Family attractions

It’s a fun option if you’re looking for something different during your vacation.

Visit the Central Florida Zoo

For animal lovers, the Central Florida Zoo provides a fun and affordable day trip.

You’ll find:

  • Animal exhibits
  • Interactive experiences
  • Family-friendly activities
  • Beautiful outdoor walking areas

It’s a nice change of pace if you’re spending an extended vacation in the Orlando area.

Why We Schedule Non-Park Days

We’ve found that adding at least one non-park day to longer Disney vacations helps us recharge and enjoy our trip even more.

Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, we get to slow down, explore resorts, enjoy great food, and discover parts of Walt Disney World that many guests never see.

Some of our favorite Disney memories have happened outside the parks entirely.

The next time you’re planning a Walt Disney World vacation, consider setting aside a day to explore beyond the parks. You may be surprised how much there is to see and do without ever scanning into a theme park.
