Packing for a Cruise
Packing for a cruise can be exciting—and a little overwhelming. After several cruises, including an unforgettable Alaska sailing, we’ve learned that some items become absolute lifesavers while others never leave the suitcase.
To help you pack smarter, we’ve created this ultimate cruise packing guide. While many cruise packing lists focus on the basics, we’re also sharing the items that made a real difference on our Alaska cruise, along with a few things we probably could have left at home.
Whether you’re sailing to Alaska, the Caribbean, or anywhere in between, this checklist will help you prepare for a stress-free vacation.
Travel Documents
Before you even think about clothing or cruise gadgets, make sure you have the essentials:
- Passport or government-issued ID
- Cruise documents and boarding information
- Travel insurance information
- Credit cards and a small amount of cash
- Airline tickets (if flying)
- Excursion confirmations
- Emergency contact information

Take photos of all important travel documents and save them to your phone. It’s an easy backup if something gets misplaced during your trip.
Clothing Essentials
Every cruise is different, but these basics work for most sailings:
Daily Wear
- T-shirts
- Casual shirts
- Shorts
- Comfortable pants or jeans
- Undergarments
- Sleepwear
- Swimsuit
- Lightweight jacket or sweatshirt
Evening Wear
- Casual dinner outfits
- One outfit for formal or dress-up night (if desired)
- Comfortable shoes for dinner and entertainment

Don’t overpack. Choose outfits that can be mixed and matched throughout the cruise. We often find ourselves wearing our favorite comfortable outfits more than once and rarely use everything we bring.
Cruise Cabin Essentials
These are the items we never leave home without:
Magnetic Hooks
Cruise cabin walls are metal, making magnetic hooks incredibly useful for hanging hats, jackets, lanyards, backpacks, and other items.
Wrinkle Release Spray
A small bottle can save you from wrinkled clothes without needing an iron.
Reusable Water Bottle
Helpful for staying hydrated both onboard and in port.
Portable Charger
Perfect for long excursion days when you’re taking photos and using your phone for navigation.
Motion Sickness Medication
Even if you don’t normally get motion sickness, it’s better to have it and not need it than the other way around.

Magnetic hooks are one of the best cruise purchases we’ve made. They’re inexpensive and make small cabins feel much more organized.
Electronics and Photography
Don’t forget:
- Phone chargers
- Smart watch chargers
- Camera equipment
- Memory cards
- Power bank
- Binoculars
- Telephoto lens (if you have one)

We purchased a reasonably priced pair of binoculars before our Alaska cruise and were glad we did. They made it much easier to spot wildlife and enjoy distant scenery from the ship.
Alaska Cruise Packing Extras
Alaska is different from most cruise destinations. Even during the summer months, weather can change quickly, and layering is key.
Waterproof Rain Jacket
This was one of our most-used items.
Rain is common in many Alaska ports, and a quality waterproof jacket helps keep you comfortable without adding too much bulk.
Down Vest
One of our favorite additions.
A down vest adds warmth when needed but packs easily and fits comfortably under a rain jacket.
Layers, Layers, Layers
Bring a variety of clothing layers.
Temperatures can vary dramatically between ports, glacier viewing days, and time spent onboard.
We often started the day bundled up and ended it in much lighter clothing.
Warm Socks
A small item that makes a big difference.
Cool mornings, glacier viewing, and rainy weather can make warm socks especially appreciated.
Waterproof Shoes
Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
Before our cruise, we waterproofed our sneakers with Scotchgard. This helped keep our feet dry while still allowing us to wear the shoes we found most comfortable.
Hat and Light Gloves
Particularly useful during glacier viewing and early mornings on deck.
Binoculars
A must-have for Alaska.
Whales, bears, eagles, mountain goats, and breathtaking scenery are often much farther away than they appear.
Telephoto Lens
If photography is important to you, bring your telephoto lens.
Wildlife sightings are frequent, but rarely close enough for standard phone cameras to capture detailed photos.
Things We Packed But Barely Used
Not everything we packed earned its place in our suitcase.
Waterproof Boots
We brought waterproof boots but rarely used them.
They would have been extremely helpful for hiking excursions or snow-related activities, but for our cruise itinerary, waterproofed sneakers handled most situations perfectly.
Heavy Winter Coat
A heavy winter coat wasn’t necessary for us.
Layering with a waterproof jacket and down vest provided plenty of warmth without the bulk.
Too Many Dress Clothes
Like many cruisers, we packed more evening clothing than we actually needed.
Cruise vacations tend to be more relaxed than many first-time cruisers expect.

The best cruise packing strategy is simple: pack smart, not heavy.
Focus on comfortable clothing, versatile layers, and a few cruise-specific items that will make your trip easier. For Alaska especially, prepare for changing weather and prioritize comfort over packing “just in case” items.
