The Ultimate Universal Orlando Planning Guide (2026)

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Universal Vacation

When people ask us for help planning a Universal Orlando vacation, the questions are usually the same: Which hotel should I stay at? Is Express Pass worth it? How many days do I need? What about Epic Universe?

After years of visiting Universal Orlando, holding annual passes, attending Mardi Gras, Halloween Horror Nights, and even visiting Epic Universe on opening day, we’ve learned a few things along the way.

This guide brings together all of our best Universal Orlando tips in one place to help you plan an amazing trip.

Why We Love Universal Orlando

While we’ll always be Disney fans, Universal offers a completely different experience.

We love the thrills, the immersive Harry Potter areas, the walkability of the resort, and now the incredible addition of Epic Universe.

One thing we especially appreciate is how easy Universal can be to navigate. Park hopping is simple, many hotels are within walking distance, and Universal often requires less advance planning than Disney.

As annual passholders, we find ourselves returning again and again. There is always something new to experience, whether it’s a seasonal event, a new attraction, or simply revisiting our favorite rides and restaurants.

How Many Days Do You Need?

2-Day Trip

Perfect if you want to focus on:

  • Universal Studios Florida
  • Islands of Adventure

This is a great option for a quick getaway, but you’ll likely be moving at a fast pace.

3-Day Trip

Our recommendation for most first-time visitors.

This gives you time for:

  • Universal Studios Florida
  • Islands of Adventure
  • Epic Universe

You’ll be able to experience the major attractions without feeling rushed.

4-5 Day Trip

Best for:

  • Re-riding favorites
  • Pool time
  • CityWalk dining
  • Water park visits
  • A more relaxed pace

This is our favorite approach because it allows time to enjoy the hotels and atmosphere rather than rushing from attraction to attraction.

Understanding the Universal Parks

Universal Studios Florida

Home to:

  • Diagon Alley
  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • Men in Black
  • Minion Land
  • Transformers
  • E.T. Adventure

This park is packed with movie-themed attractions and immersive experiences.

Islands of Adventure

Our favorite rides include:

  • Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
  • VelociCoaster
  • The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
  • Jurassic Park River Adventure
  • The Incredible Hulk Coaster

This is also where you’ll find Hogsmeade and some of the best thrill rides in Orlando.

Epic Universe

Epic Universe has completely changed the game.

The theming is incredible, and we found the food quality noticeably improved throughout the park.

Highlights include:

  • Super Nintendo World
  • Dark Universe
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
  • Celestial Park
  • How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Mike attended opening-day previews and walked away saying “wow” more than once. Universal has truly raised the bar with this park.

Is Universal Express Pass Worth It?

For many visitors, yes.

Express Pass can dramatically reduce wait times at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

Our biggest tip is to consider staying at one of Universal’s premier hotels:

  • Portofino Bay Hotel
  • Hard Rock Hotel
  • Royal Pacific Resort

These hotels include Unlimited Express Pass for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

For a family, the included Express Pass can often offset much of the higher room cost.

Important: Express Pass is currently not included with Epic Universe hotel stays, and availability at Epic Universe attractions is different from the original parks.

Choosing the Right Universal Hotel

Best Romantic Hotel: Portofino Bay Hotel

This is our personal favorite.

We love:

  • The Italian atmosphere
  • Beautiful waterfront views
  • Alfresco dining
  • Evening singers performing from balconies

If Tara and I are planning an adults-only getaway, Portofino is usually our first choice.

Best Location: Hard Rock Hotel

Hard Rock offers the easiest walk to Universal Studios Florida.

We especially love staying here during:

  • Mardi Gras
  • Halloween Horror Nights
  • Christmas season

Being able to quickly walk back to the room is a huge advantage.

Best Deluxe Value: Royal Pacific Resort

Royal Pacific is often the most affordable hotel that still includes Unlimited Express Pass.

It’s a great balance of location, amenities, and value.

Best Family Value Resort: Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Cabana Bay features:

  • Fun retro theming
  • Great pools
  • Lazy river
  • Affordable pricing

This is one of our favorite value resorts anywhere in Orlando.

Best Budget Option: Endless Summer Resorts

Surfside and Dockside offer excellent value for families looking to maximize their vacation budget.

Best Epic Universe Hotel: Helios Grand Hotel

Nothing beats the location.

The dedicated entrance directly into Epic Universe is a huge advantage.

If your primary goal is maximizing time at Epic Universe, Helios is hard to beat.

Where to Eat at Universal Orlando

One thing that surprised us in recent years is just how much Universal’s food has improved.

CityWalk Favorites

Toothsome Chocolate Emporium

A must-do for many visitors.

Don’t miss:

  • Brunch options
  • Incredible desserts
  • Macaron selection

While the milkshakes get most of the attention, we actually think the desserts are the real stars of the menu.

Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food

A fun atmosphere with flavorful Mexican dishes and live entertainment.

Vivo Italian Kitchen

A solid choice for pasta and Italian favorites.

Hot Dog Hall of Fame

Perfect for a quick and affordable meal.

Cinnabon

We’re not usually donut people, so while Voodoo Doughnut gets plenty of attention, we’d often choose a warm cinnamon roll and iced coffee from Cinnabon instead.

In the Parks

Our favorites include:

  • Three Broomsticks
  • Minion Cafe

Both offer themed dining experiences that fit perfectly into your park day.

Epic Universe Favorites

Epic Universe has really elevated Universal’s food game.

Our standouts include:

Das Stakehaus

The theming is fantastic and fits perfectly within Dark Universe.

Pizza Moon

Some of the best pizza we’ve had in any theme park.

If you’re visiting Epic Universe, this is one meal we would absolutely prioritize.

Don’t Miss Universal’s Special Events

Mardi Gras

One of our favorite times to visit.

Highlights include:

  • Food booths
  • Concerts
  • Parade
  • Seasonal entertainment

The food booths alone make this event worth experiencing.

Halloween Horror Nights

Often considered the premier Halloween event in the country.

Even if haunted houses aren’t your thing, the atmosphere is incredible.

Holidays at Universal

Featuring:

  • Macy’s Holiday Parade
  • Grinchmas
  • Seasonal decorations
  • Holiday entertainment

The Christmas season is one of our favorite times to visit Universal.
